SJE Arts Oxford is a much-loved arts venue situated at St. John the Evangelist Church in the heart of Oxford.
Originally designed by Victorian architect George Frederick Bodley, this Grade-I listed church was intended as a place of worship for an Anglican religious order, the Society of John the Evangelist. Plain chant played a significant role in worship, and the architectural choices and simple decoration were intentionally made to enhance the purity and clarity of the sound, ensuring that every note could be heard with clarity throughout.
Today, this historic venue functions as both a college chapel for St. Stephen's House, Oxford, and a highly sought-after concert venue. Attracting numerous internationally acclaimed musicians, SJE hosts a wide range of genres, including choral, opera, jazz, folk, and orchestral music, establishing it as a premier destination in Oxford for live performances.
