About the Work
The Well-tempered Clavier is a masterpiece by J.S. Bach, renowned for its brilliance and influence on keyboard music. Originally intended to educate young musicians and entertain skilled performers, it is celebrated for its inventive complexity. The composition consists of two books, each containing a full set of preludes and fugues in every major and minor key. Book II, published in 1742, is particularly noted for its imaginative and complex nature, presenting a formidable challenge for any pianist.
Performer
Piere-Laurent Aimard is acclaimed as an authority in the music of our time – a friend and collaborator of Messiaen and of Ligeti – but he is also recognised as a significant interpreter of piano repertoire from every age. Twelve years ago, he recorded the first book of The Well-tempered Clavier. This concert is an unmissable chance to hear him tackle the towering challenge of Book II.
