Mark Viner's performance begins with Beethoven's Sonata quasi una fantasia, op.27 no.2, popularly known as the 'Moonlight Sonata'. Following Beethoven, the program features Lyapunov's Fêtes de Noël, op.41, a suite of four Christmas-themed musical tableaux followed by Chopin's Ballade no.1, op.23. After a brief interval, the concert resumes with selections from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, op.71, including much-loved pieces such as the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and "Pas de Deux". The large-scale oratorio, Christus tells of Jesus Christ from birth to death and offers a triumphant close to this Christmas concert.
This is the second concert in the The 12th SJE Arts International Piano Series which aims to bring interesting pianists from around the world to an Oxford audience.
