Brahms Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, op. 24
Angela's programme is a joyful celebration of the Baroque era. It begins with a lovely Italianate suite by Handel, a hint of the opera aria, followed by Bach’s lively baroque dances. The mood shifts with Haydn’s grand and spacious final piano sonata, considered his greatest. After the interval, Handel’s Chaconne leads into Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a theme by Handel. Brahms creatively explores Handel’s simple melody from the B-flat major harpsichord suite through twenty-five beautifully structured variations.
